Do not fret. I know I am, but it's okay. A lot of people fear them too, and I mean a lot. We can't blame them right? When these things come scrurrying towards your feet from under your closet, or come flying to your face from atop a shelf, then people will know how sinister these little critters are.I've recounted countless encounters with these devils - at home, at work, at friends' houses, on the street, on my bed - and none of those experiences are ever come close to pleasant. They wait in ambush and then spring out just when you don't expect even a small harmless black ant.
Yesterday, I was preparing for night shift and was looking for black socks in a box inside my closet. Maybelyne was on the laptop minding her own business. When I finally got my socks, a dark golden brown cockroach about twice the size of the fingernail on my thumb.
Me: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! (jumps backwards about 4 feet towards the bed then rolls backwards about 3 feet towards the wall)
Maybelyne: Such a coward.
Me: There's a cockroach!!
Maybelyne: I know, I saw. Go ahead and kill it before it gets into our clothes.
Me: Why don't you kill it?
Maybelyne: You found it you kill it.
Me: (gets Maybelyne's slippers and very cautiously look for the cockroach)
Roach: (came out from under the right side of the closet then runs to the small left space between the closet and the wall)
Me: It's gone. I can't get to it.
Maybelyne: ...
Me: Do you know that cockroaches can survive without a head?
Maybelyne: I know, I studied them remember? Do you know how long they have been on earth?
Me: Yeah I know. Hundreds of millions years ago.
Maybelyne: They existed even before the dinosaurs all died out and even before dinosaurs existed. Do you know at which period cockroaches appeared? Jurassic? Pleistoscene?
Me: ...horror scene? I know it's very long time ago. Do you know that cockroaches will be the next dominant species on the planet? They are the only ones that can survive a nuclear holocaust you know.
Maybelyne: That's too much.
Me: No no no. Humans will be extinct and since cockroaches have millions of years of practice on survival, they will be the next dominant species on the earth.
Maybelyne: You want that?
Me: As long as humans and cockroaches don't exist together I'm fine with it. That way no one will ever fear them anymore.
Maybelyne: ?!?!?!?!
Cockroaches are smelly, itchy, disgusting, hairy, and everything not nice. No one likes them. I can't believe people eat them, and then consider them a delicacy afterwards. Ever heard of chocolate-coated fried cockroaches? Yuck!
I don't personally know anyone who likes them. Most people are either irritated or afraid of them. But there is one person I know who can give a good testament as to how scary cockroaches can be, and how dangerous they can be in bringing down even the most powerful people amidst us. Watch this and may your morale be boosted:
Gu Jun Pyo is also afraid of cockroaches, so why shouldn't we be?
